The other day, while coaching a high school athlete, he told me that he couldn’t visualize.
“Whenever I close my eyes and attempt to picture something, I don’t see anything,” he told me.
“Do you see anything when your eyes are open?” I asked.
“What do you mean?”
“What I mean is, if you think of eating your favorite food, do you see an image flash across the screen of your mind?”
The boy thought for a moment as his eyes scanned upward. He smiled as he located the image of his favorite food.
And yet, despite doing this in plain sight, the boy still wasn’t aware that he just “visualized.”
Visualization isn’t something you are only engaged in when your eyes are closed and you’re engaged in a deliberate, conscious attempt to influence your mind. You are visualizing all the time, all day long, with your eyes open.
And the reality is that most people are totally unconscious of this basic fact.
“I don’t visualize; I just do it,” some will say, ignoring the fact that no one “just does” anything without seeing an image of what he’s going to “just do” before doing it.
Those who “just do it” see an image of what they want to do, and without hesitating, they GO after it. This doesn’t mean they “just do it” – even if they think that’s what they do.
Some people think they don’t visualize because they take time to write out their goals and daily plan of action, which they refer to (mentally picture) throughout the day. To those I say, and what do you think you’re doing each time you look at your goals and daily plan?
You’re visualizing.
In fact, you cannot write a list of goals or a daily plan unless you picture the goals and the plan in your “mind’s eye” first.
You do this with your eyes open.
You may be unconscious of doing so, but I assure you, that’s what is taking place.
Visualization is NOT something you do when you close your eyes. It’s something you do all day long, every single day, even if you don’t know you’re doing it.
Visualization is automatic. But when you close your eyes and attempt to consciously direct traffic, the task can feel unnatural for some people.
To get over this hurdle, I show the person how to visualize with open eyes.
I don’t talk about alpha or theta or beta or delta. I keep it super simple.
You don’t need to put people “under” to wake them up. You can wake them up when they’re already up.
I’ll be covering more on this in August when I hold a Psycho-Cybernetics Certification Seminar in Tampa Bay, Florida.
I will have more information posted on it very soon. In the interim, you can find out more through the Matt Furey Theatre of the Mind Facebook Group – or you can email me directly to express interest.
