Twas in Manhattan most of last week, right where the U.S. Open was being played – yet I was so focused on bizness that I didn’t learn about the expletive-laced outburst of Serena Williams at the U.S. Open until today.
Talk about being a sore loser. Threatening a line judge. Telling her you’d like to shove the ball down her “expletive-deleted” throat.
Ouch.
No class. No class at all.
Serena was immediately hit with a $10,000.00 fine – and more may be coming down the ‘fault’ line as well.
Then there’s Kanye West. Another champion of ‘bad form.’
Taylor Swift is on stage to receive her MTV award – and West jumps in front of her, grabs the microphone and starts rapping about whom he think deserves the award.
Huh?
Does any of this make you wonder WHAT is going on in the U.S. today?
We’re talking about disgraceful behavior by so-called adults who are supposed to be some sort of role-model for today’s youth.
Well, they’re not.
I was 12 years old when I threw a fit after our freestyle relay team lost a race. I was the anchor leg and the boy before me lost a 1/2 pool lead. By the time he touched and I dove in we were 1/2 pool behind.
Although I swam with all my might, we still lost and I was so angry about it I followed the boy to where his parents were sitting. In front of them I yelled at him, berated him and called him names.
Then this person called “mom” called out to me.
“Matt, come here.”
“No,” I said.
“MATT, COME HERE.”
When I stood before my 5’1″ 100-pound mother, she said, “Grab your stuff, we’re going home.”
“No, I don’t want to go home,” I said.
“Doesn’t matter. GRAB YOUR STUFF NOW.”
On the walk home, my mother taught me something I never forgot. “Matt, you may be good. You may be faster than the other kids you compete against. But if you lose your temper after a loss, no one will respect you. They will say the following, ‘Yeah, that Furey kid is good – BUT … he’s a hot head.”
Serena Williams.
Booed as she walked off the court. Not for her mistakes as a player – but for being a hot head.
Kanye West, booed off the stage after grabbing the microphone from Taylor Swift and trying to destroy her time in the limelight.
And then, just when I think, “Has the world gone to hell?” I see the footage of Beyonce not only receiving her award – but calling Taylor Swift back on stage to share in the limelight stolen from her.
Aaah – there is hope for humanity. In the midst of all the idiocy and chaos – someone was able to maintain a state of calm and do the right thing.
That’s the Zero Resistance Living Way of doing things. Regardless of how tough things may be around you – find a way to do the right thing.
