So I’m standing in the airport, getting ready to go through security.
40 days of training in China are now over, and it’s time to depart.
I turn to my brother-in-law, standing a few feet away, bow and extend my hand.
“Xie xie ni de bang mang,” I say. Thank you for your help.
And then I turn to my right and begin my short but long walk through the tunnel. Out of my book bag I pull my laptop and other electronics and place them in the tray.
Off with my shoes. Onward.
On and off with the feelings of missing my family back home while leaving family and friends and teachers behind in China.
As I take my seat on the plane and recline, I already miss China, and I haven’t left yet.
I got back yesterday morning and after waking up at 3 AM today, it really hit me.
In terms of my training, I’m on my own again. No more 9 AM and 2 PM classes. No more scheduled meals.
Five hours of training each day were so much easier because I had someone waiting on me. I had a class to attend.
Now, if I am to train, it is up to me and me alone.
No one is waiting for me. No one is scheduling me.
My goal is to train at least an hour per day in what I practiced each day in China.
That’s nothing compared to five hours per day.
Yet it is because I have to get into the zone on my own.
How am I going to do that?
By making the goal part of a larger process with a commitment to continually find ways to improve.
The physical practice was a big part of my training in China – but so was the mental imagery.
In fact, I made my biggest improvements when I took a seat, or stood in place, and mentally pictured what I was to do BEFORE doing it.
Funny how this works. It’s not rocket science – yet it really is, because we send rockets to destinations we program in advance.
That’s what cybernetics is.
You nail down a target, then direct yourself and your actions toward that target.
Doing so requires the use of mental imagery. You see where you want to be in your imagination before you get there in physical reality.
What result do you want to create in your life today?
Why not take a minute or two to picture being there already – and see what happens?
Have fun with this. It’s not work – yet it works.
Here endeth the lesson.
