My son was already in bed, reading my soon-to-be-released book, The Unbeatable Man.
Didn’t matter.
I interrupted him.
“Frank, the Patriots are down by 11 with three minutes to go. I sense something BIG. Strange things happen on Monday Night Football.”
“Do you think the Patriots can still win?” Frank asked.
“Of course. If it gets close I’ll come get you.”
A minute later the Patriots scored. They went for the two-point conversion and missed. Still five points behind.
They kicked off. A deep kick. And they hit the kick off return specialist so hard you could see their intention spiraling in the air.
The ball popped loose. The Patriots recovered on the Bills 31-yard line.
“Hey bro, get up and watch this. The Patriots are going to win. I want you to see yet another reason why you never give up, no matter what the score.”
We sat together on the couch as the Buffalo Bills lost the game they appeared to have in a ‘W’ column.
Two touchdowns for the Patriots in a little more than 70 seconds. Then they held off the Bills till the final buzzer rung.
“This is the sort of attitude that helps you win in any area of life,” I said. “I wanted you to see this so you remember the motto of champions. You know what it is, right?”
“Never give up,” Frank said.
“That’s right. Keep this in mind whenever times get tough. You can always come back. You can always improve. But if you give up, you have no chance.”
A good note to send my son into dreamland with, me thinks. A good reminder for myself as well.
