There’s a true story about the power of visualization that goes like this: Three groups were tested in the art of free throw shooting. After the test each group was given different instructions.
Group A practiced free throw shooting for the next month. All they worked on were their mechanics.
Group B practiced the mental game only. They visualized successfully shooting free throws for the next month. They did no work on their mechanics
Group C did nothing.
At the end of a month all three groups were retested. The group who worked mechanics improved 24%. The group who only visualized improved 23%. And the group who did nothing showed no improvement.
It’s a great story but it doesn’t give the whole story. How about the person who works on his mechanics for hours and hours and still goes into a game and does the opposite of what he worked on?
Ever see that?
Well, my friend, when you do, make a note: What you’re seeing, a so-called breakdown in mechanics, is not really the result of poor mechanics. The athlete knows what to do. He just can’t make himself do it.
It’s poor concentration skills due to a mind-body-spirit breakdown.
To turn a Biblical phrase: The flesh is willing but the spirit is weak.
How do I know this is so? Because I’ve worked with the athletes who’ve trained their mechanics to the point of exhaustion. And they still cannot do the right thing. Yet, after a 15-minute session of Theatre of the Mind – all is suddenly well in their world. These athletes are NOW able to do what they trained to do.
The same principle applies in academia, in the business world, in the creative arts and in any other arena you work in.
Students who are having trouble in a certain class can be turned around quickly, by training their spirit. By this I mean, find what they’re doing well in. Find the subject that they effortlessly learn. Then get the student to imagine and feel the energy of the “positive” class going into the one they’re struggling with. When you do this with Theatre of the Mind, the results come so quickly, it’s as if you performed a magic act.
Sure, you can improve the “method” or way the student studies, and that’s good – but if the energy of the student is still ho-hum, there’s just no way she can be turned around.
Now, here’s what’s truly awesome: If you can affect positive change from one session of Theatre of the Mind – what do you think happens when you use it everyday.
