Why? Because each day when they look in the mirror, they’re living in the NOW. They’re not 60% focused on what happened yesterday – and 40% focused on tomorrow. In October of 2006, at the closing of a seminar, I told a story that I had always refused to speak about publicly.

One of the biggest discoveries in psychology came to us about 50 years ago.

Before this discovery we had self-esteem, self-respect, self-discipline, self-control, selflessness, selfishness, and so on.

But it wasn’t until Dr. Maxwell Maltz came around with his 30 million copy best-seller, Psycho-Cybernetics, that anyone heard of this thing called “Self-Image.”

What was THAT.

It’s the mental blueprint we have of ourselves; the way we see ourselves on the inside; the inner thermostat that controls how successful we’ll become in life.

People latched onto the teachings contained in Psycho-Cybernetics in a huge way – and success came to many who wanted to know how to get more living out of life.

I first read the book in 1987, when I began my business career as a personal fitness trainer. I read the book mostly to improve my business – but I quickly learned that the principles within did far more than help me sell. They gave me peace of mind, greater levels of energy, more confidence – and so on.

Some years ago, when I began the Psycho-Cybernetics coaching program, I was shocked when a student of meditation told me he had been taught that there is no “self.”

The idea struck me as odd, at first. But over time I came to understand what this student meant.

When you get to more advanced levels of visualization, when everything is in flow, when you don’t feel the negative pull of resistance upon you, when you think about something and it happens without effort, when you look into the eyes of another and see yourself – you have at least a partial concept of no self.

Yet, this feeling of “no self” was created through a process of deep breathing mixed with imagination, feeling and mental pictures.

Last summer, when my son, Frank, and I were visiting the island of Pu Tuo Shan in China, we stood outside the hotel doing a series of chi kung visualizations. There were a total of ten postures in the set I taught him – each with a different thing in nature to focus on and imagine.

At the end of the set I said, “So Frank, how do you feel.”

To my surprise he said: “Like I don’t even exist.”

Hmmm.

No self.

So, the question is: Self or No Self.

Answer: Yes.

We have a self-image. All of us have a mental picture of who we think we are. And this mental picture guides us to the level of success we experience.

At the same time, when you get yourself into that calm, peaceful, blissful state – you enter the “no self” state of mind.

You feel good for no particular reason. You haven’t even achieved the goal you’ve set yet. All you’ve done is imagine having done so. All you’ve done is recall positive memories from your past. All you’ve done is change the way you breathe.

And you’re already happy. You already have peace of mind.

Naaaah, couldn’t be.

Or could it.

There’s only one way to know for sure. Practice Psycho-Cybernetics on a daily basis. Make it a daily habit.

When you do you’ll get into a state of flow. Without resistance. Without the drag of negative emotion tugging at you.

You’ll feel totally alive. Totally connected. Totally self-less.

How’d you get there. By thinking upon this idea of a Big Self – your self-image – the mental picture you have of yourself.

Get yourself into this state of flow and success will chase after you – rather than the other way around.

You can try to live in the future – or in the past, yet it’s impossible. All you have is NOW.

But you can use your present moments to recall the past – as well as to visualize the future. You can also use your now to by aware of your thinking, breathing and doing – as they are taking place in this moment.

Whichever you choose, it’s still NOW. And there’s great power in knowing this. Really knowing this.

Why. Because once you understand the past and future can only be experienced NOW – you realize that everything you think or believe about what has already happened or will happen – is nothing but a mental movie. And if the past and
future are nothing but mental movies, you can write the script, direct the action, call the shots, decide on which frames to keep and which to throw out. You can even be the audience to all of what you’re doing.

In fact, you ARE the audience.

Whenever you remember the past or visualize the future, it’s not just YOU in the picture – it’s You and your other self – the one who is either praising you or condemning you.

Which are you doing to yourself today. If you’re looking at your past and finding the good moments, you’re giving yourself the praise you need to perform at your best in the NOW.

If, however, you’re condemning what you see in the past, you’re making it even harder for yourself to do well in this moment.

Whether you realize it or not, all the movies in your mind that make up your past – you already directed them, edited them and played them a certain way. The good news is that you can do a re-make of the old movies. You can reshoot them and package them to your liking. You can take a sad story and turn it into a happy one.

If you were to look at my ears, even from a distance of 10 feet, you’d probably notice that they are dis-figured. In wrestling and boxing, my ears are known as cauliflower ears. They look a bit like doorknobs made in Mongolia.

If the average person were to have ears like mine, he or she would think of it as awful. But not me – and not most wrestlers, grapplers and boxers who have them. We think they’re great. We consider them a badge of honor. We wear them with pride. They are our battle scars. Wrestlers who have them had to be tough. Wrestlers who don’t have them were most likely average, at best.

That’s the story we tell ourselves to justify the knobs we call ears.

Think of this. If I can look at my ears in a positive light, then I can take anything from my past and figure out a way to make it a good thing.

Granted, some of our memories are not easy to recall. When we watch them we may feel a sense of horror, or anger, or guilt.

But if we will take a step back; maybe even several steps back; and consider that the past and the future are mere movies in our minds, we can make a change in how we feel in the present. If we’ll consider that we have the ability to turn our horror flicks into something better – well then, we then know the REAL POWER in NOW.

No matter how short or tall you are – you’ll instantly FEEL better if you walk TALL.

I know a lot of tall people who slouch, almost as if they’re embarrassed to be taller than you. This robs them of their confidence and courage.

What a ride last night. Waiting til the clock rolled 12 midnight along with about a million others. Awesome to say the least.The last time I stayed up through New Years was 1999, when I rang in the New Millenium was a couple thousand bodyweight squats, aka Hindu squats.

Last night was special because eight years ago my wife, Zhannie, was pregnant with our son, Frank. And Frank was up with us last night, through it all. The three of us held each other as the final seconds of 2007 ticked away. What a rush.

If you set your goals for 2008 before last night that is a good thing. Now it’s a matter of being focused each day and making sure you have the right information and right coaches and mentors before you – to help you go where you want
FASTER.

It would be a horrible mistake to try to go it alone. Years ago Iearned the following phrase from Dr. Robert Schuller – “I need help – I can’t do it alone.”

The misinformed, arrogant, and ego-driven think they can go it alone and succeed at a high level. Not possible. The greatest achievers throughout history had mentors and advisors and coaches and this will NEVER change.

Show me a man who thinks there’s no secret knowledge, that he doesn’t need advice, coaching or help in anyway – that success is nothing but hard, hard work – and I’ll show you someone with a closed mind. Success is ALL about discovering what you didn’t know before, applying it and continuing to be open to and listen to those who have knowledge you don’t possess or are afraid to apply properly.

Anything you do not know that someone else does – is a SECRET to you.

Anything that someone else knows that you wish you knew – is a secret to you.

Don’t you think there are 31 NFL head coaches who’d like to know what Bill Bellicek knows about getting a team united around a vision. How about getting a Randy Moss to shut up and put up. No other coach was able to accomplish that one.

How’d he do it. Do you know the answer. If not, you cannot duplicate his success.

I guarantee the answer to getting Moss to play the way he is is NOT “hard, hard work.” First his mind had to be captured.

No one has been able to do that before.

Hmm.

Over the past 30 years I have studied the most successful men and women in history, and believe me, they knew things that the less successful did not know.
