Extreme Focus
Last week I was hyper-focused. More than I usually am. A lot more.
I had a book to write.
It’s not a 100,000-word book, but it is long enough to deliver a riveting, powerful and soul-stirring message.
I began on Sunday afternoon with the introduction.
On Monday I wrote the first two chapters.
Followed by the next two on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, two more. Then another two on Thursday.
On Friday I thought I would write the conclusion, but I sensed another chapter was necessary, so I cranked that out. And I was finished.
With the first draft, that is.
Currently this book, Goal Getting, is 22,000 words. The second draft will probably kick it up to 25,000. The third may knock it down a bit.
Regardless, the lion’s share of heavy lifting is done. And man, does it feel good. When you’re creating something new each day, it’s hard to imagine that can get any better.
When you’re in the flow, time ceases to exist. Hours are mere minutes. You lose track of what day or week it is.
One of the highlights, after finishing the first draft, was a surprise testimonial that was posted on my Theatre of the Mind Facebook group, confirming one of the many messages in the book.
John Rugh, 62, took up the guitar last October. And by using my Goal Getting™ method, he is already playing November Rain, a classic from Guns N Roses.
To achieve his goal, John focused on a daily goal of “getting” five notes of the song down.
He said that after six months of lessons, most people, regardless of age, are stuck on “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” while he’s doing something much more difficult.
The secret to John’s success is focusing on what is easy via a daily goal that is achievable, realistic, repeatable and sustainable; a goal that may even seem ridiculously easy.
Congratulations, John. I’m happy for you, and I’m proud of you.
As I often say, “When you focus on the small you can have it all; when you focus on the big you stumble on every twig.”

P.S. I’m currently deciding upon whether to have another Goal Getting™ Intensive in April… or one on Defeating the Failure Mechanism. You’re welcome to let me know your preference by emailing me at mattfurey@mac.com

No Unsolicited Advice
She received an email from me,
after signing up to them, for free.
I sent one to her, and to you as well,
it ticked her off, and what the hell?
She wrote me back with words so crass,
“No unsolicited advice, and kiss my a$$.”
I wondered to myself what’s troubling her,
nothing I wrote should ruffle one’s fur.
Keeping in mind those old inner scars,
a reminder it was, to stare at those stars.

Just one question for you, my dear.
Who is it that has your ear?
Is it Joe or is it Jane?
Is it someone who’s life’s in vain?
Is it someone who forever doubts,
you will accomplish what you’re about?
Or is it someone paralyzed with fear;
whose mission in life is another beer?
Guard your ears and guard your eyes;
from envious spirits who steal the prize.

“Have a goal every day, no matter how small.”
– Maxwell Maltz, M.D.,
from The Essential Psycho-Cybernetics – our newest book that combines four of Dr. Maltz’ classics.
Charles Runels, M.D. went from being a small town doctor to one whose inventions and protocols are used throughout the world.
Recently, he told me that one of the most valuable things I taught him was the importance of having a daily practice. He told me how following this seemingly small piece of wisdom catapulted him to success in largely unforeseen ways.
There are many people who would not consider a daily practice, of anything, to be a goal. These people think that ALL goals must have definite targets, including a date of accomplishment.
This is not the truth.
Consider this: When you were much, much younger, and you picked up a pen to write, or a crayon to draw, did your parents immediately approach you and tell you that you need to have a long-term goal with a definite date to become a professional writer or artist? Did they encourage you to model Benjamin Franklin or Michelangelo?
I don’t think so. And if they did, can you imagine how much you would resist and rebel against the idea?
Well, this same type of resistance often takes place in your adult life when you are pushed to set big, scary goals, instead of getting started with the here and now, something much more tangible.
It is enough to watch you get started on something that may turn into something huge, if you continue with a daily practice.
So yes, observing a daily practice is one way I teach to become a professional goal getter. And for many, it is the most valuable goal you will ever form because it is one you GET on a daily basis.
Every day, after your practice, including on the days when you encountered the greatest amount of psychological resistance, you can look in the mirror and declare victory. You can declare that you have won another mental battle over yourself. You didn’t give in to laziness, boredom, frustration, or whatever distraction was airing on the news. You got the job done.
And that deserves a big, “Hurrah!”
See it. Feel it. Be it.

P.S. I’m having a Goal-Getting Intensive on January 15, at 7 PM EST, wherein I explain the ULTIMATE DAILY PRACTICE, the one that beats all others. This Goal-Getting Intensive is filling up FAST. Interested? Email me for details: goals@psycho-cybernetics.com

I keep various notebooks and journals.
Some tiny, some much larger.
Others are leather bound, this one has
spirals.
I write cursive or script and almost never print.
Sometimes the characters I draw… a bit better than
stick figures – have squares and triangles that drop a
hint.
And then there are the rhyming words, the poems.
Written just for fun when life is easy or rough.
No thoughts of buy or sell, letting my mind
roam.
Feels good to free the mind from its cell.
Once a day, to let loose without a snare.
Climb a bonsai tree? Let crickets ring a
bell?
With pen and pad, the trivial becomes important.
The telling of what you can ruin or create.
Can you fish without water, or turn a walk into a
hunt?

P.S. I thought today’s entry would come from my notebook, but as I began… something else wrote itself upon the page. When that happens, go with it.

Two worries. Negative and positive.
Negative worry is about problems.
Positive worry transcends problems
and creates a new path.
from One Breath at a Time
As Dr. Maltz taught in Psycho-Cybernetics, worry is the negative use of your imagination. You picture something in the future and the image you see is horrible.
When you picture something negative in the future, you instantly feel fear, anger, horror and panic.
But when you turn worry into something positive, you picture what you want.
To enhance your mental imagery even more, here’s how you can verbally turn the following situations around:
You’re worried that you’re going to lose your job.
“I’m worried I am going to keep my job or somehow get an even better one.”
You’re worried about a trip you’re going to take.
“I’m worried that I’m going to have an incredible trip.”
I’m worried that I’m going to be homeless.
“I’m worried I’m going to make so much money I will feel totally relieved from life’s burdens.”
Postive Worry!
Give it a whirl and change your whirld for the better.

Here’s a little poem my alter ego, el Furecat, wrote that I felt compelled to send to you today.
Will’s Powers
You have a Will for a Reason,
and an Imagination ever ready,
every day of every season.
Although One’s Creative Imagination
beats Will’s Powers 100 times in a row,
I wouldn’t ask for Will’s resignation.
Why not blend the two Ways into One?
And with each hand ignited and at your
command, you’ll witness the Power of Done.
