Last Wednesday, during a coaching call, I put everyone through an exercise in which we went back into the past – and explored the days in which our country was at her best.

The days in which you didn’t have to lock your doors when you left the house or went to bed at night.

The days when you could walk the streets without fear.

The days when you truly felt your elected officials were protecting your freedoms; the days in which you felt a promise really meant a promise.

The days when you were able to easily make ends meet and acquire wealth because prices and taxes were low.

The days when you didn’t hear the word ‘crisis’ tossed around like water.

The days in which you didn’t have to worry about your child going off to war.

The days in which you trusted and believed in yourself and the difference you can make in this world.

Listeners on the call were ecstatic with this visualization exercise. They felt empowered in a way they’d never felt before.

I then explained to everyone that this imagination exercise is a form of prayer. And if enough people begin to imagine and pray for a world that is free from the tyranny of BIG GOVERNMENT, then we have a chance to turn this country and this world around.

On the other hand, if we do not use the power of our imagination for freedom, if we do not pray for goodness to prevail – then we may be doomed to live in a world created by those who imagine us with no freedom.

Now, before you cast judgment on me and label me liberal, conservative, communist, Republican or Democrat – think again. I am none of these labels.

I am simply someone who believes in freedom. Freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom to become all you can so long as you don’t step on the rights of anyone else.

I am for a free economy.

I am also pro-charity as evidenced by the two schools I’ve built in China – with a third on the way.

But I am NOT for a one-world government – a NEW WORLD ORDER, a NEW AGE, which is where I believe we’re headed at this time if people don’t wake up.

On a spiritual level all of us are connected – but that is only ONE of the three basic levels.

On the physical level – none of us are connected. Each of us is different. All of us have different finger prints, different DNA.

On a mental level – all of us have different thoughts.

So I believe we must keep all three levels in mind when we hear cliches like:

“We’re all ONE.”

“There is no SELF.”

“We’re entering a NEW AGE.”

Keep in mind the three basic levels – physical, mental and spiritual.

None is more important than any of the others. All are essential.

You cannot develop mentally and spiritually without a physical body. You cannot develop physically without a mind and spirit.

Most people error on the side of being primarily focused on one of the three levels. This is a mistake.

Each and every day, take time for all three levels – but NEVER forget that even though you belong to the whole of humanity – YOU are still ONE individual. And YOU alone are deserving of abundance.

Today my wife gave me the latest news from China. Guess what they’re doing? LOWERING TAXES.

Yes.

One of the best books I ever read was “Tough Times Never Last – Tough People Do.”

It was written by Dr. Robert Schuller, a fellow Iowan who moved to California and started a church he called The Crystal Cathedral.

Throughout the book Dr. Schuller told stories of those who ‘rise up’ during times of tragedy, those who survive the toughest of times. And as you can imagine, Dr. Schuller was no stranger to the subject he wrote about.

I thoroughly identified with the book because I had just started my own business as a personal fitness trainer – and I only had a couple clients. Not enough to make rent, buy groceries and so on.

And when I read this book it gave me courage to continue onward. To keep fighting for what I wanted.

Shortly after reading “Tough Times Never Last, Tough People Do,” I was advised by Jack, a 57-year old client, to read “Psycho-Cybernetics” by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. Taking the man’s advice, I drove to the bookstore after his workout and bought a copy.

When I returned to my gym later that night I began to devour and dog-ear the book. I bought it to help me get more clients – but what it gave me went WAY beyond that.

I learned how to survive tough times by using my memory and my imagination in ways I had never had explained before. And when I did so, it was as if ‘magic’ was taking place in my life on a daily basis. The phone began to ring with customers – and within six weeks I had a packed house.

At the end of my talk this same lady was standing to my left as I shook hands with people who were thanking me for what they learned from me. One of the last people to shake my hand was a man with short black hair. As soon as we shook I smiled and said, “Ah, you broke your wrist.”

He stopped in his tracks, paused and began to scan his memory banks. After several seconds he found the event in his files.

He nodded and said, “You know, you’re right. How the heck did you know? I had completely forgotten about it.”

The answer to HOW goes as follows: Everyday I practice doing things in my imagination. I practice to the point in which I can feel things happening as if they’re real right NOW.

“What’s the difference between imagination and reality?” I asked the group I spoke to.

Then I answered my own question.

“TIME.”

“Imagination something often enough and it will show up. Use your imagination often enough, and you’ll feel things that happened long ago – or see things in the future.” I believe imagination is the God-like power all of us were given at birth. We either use it consciously – or abuse it unconsciously.

When used consciously, you eliminate from your mind all the resistance, the struggle – as well as the feeling of living in tough times. Removing the struggle and feeling of oppression is key to navigating through life faster and with far greater ease.

And the more often you do this – the faster what you imagine will come into being.

Imagination is prayer mixed with emotion, it is, as P.T. Barnum once said, “the elixir of life.”

Use your imagination productively, with intent – or be controlled by others who are.

Last week I launched a page on Facebook – reluctantly.

A few days later I launched another on Twitter – less reluctantly.

You can view it by going here and getting an account yourself so you can follow what I’m saying or doing.

It takes about 10 seconds to get set up on Twitter. Much faster than Facebook.

Like all the other social media sites, Twitter is being championed as the ‘second coming.’

In fact, it’s being hailed as the Messiah of social media – far better than all the others – and by golly, if you don’t jump in NOW – you’re going to lose out on this tremendous money splurging opportunity the likes of which will never be seen again.

Uh huh.

We’ll see.

I’m currently using both and have some ideas I plan to implement – esp. on Twitter – and I believe these can ADD to what you’re already doing online to advance your career.

But the truth is, despite all the “ah shucks, this is unreal” babble going on – almost no one, including all the gurus who promote these sites – is making a dent.

In some cases the promotion is a set-up for a product in which “all secrets will be revealed.”

Hey, not a bad idea. Even if the sites don’t make you a nickel, everyone will think they do, so create a product called, “How to Make a Nickel With Social Media.”

Fact is there are things I enjoy about Facebook and Twitter.

They’ve put me in contact with some long lost buddies – or people I went to school with and haven’t heard from since – and so on.

I enjoy being able to look at photos of people who sign up to be friends.

And I’m enjoying the exploration of this type of Internet stuff.

At the same time, I am not convinced these sites will make you an honest or dishonest dime. Time will tell. And if they don’t make me a dime, a nickel or at least a few pennies MORE than the time I invested – YOU will hear from me loud and clear.

Unlike the other gurus, I won’t pretend so that I look all-knowing.

What I will tell you is what I’ve always said, “Nothing beats emails like the one you’re receiving right NOW.”

Take all your savy, slick, sleek, underground and renegade Internet strategies and they have almost no power whatsoever UNLESS supported by a kick-butt email marketing program.

Yes, adding video to your emails is now a good idea. It wasn’t that big a deal until recently no matter what anyone says.

And it is still NOT necessary. You can still get away with nothing but straight copy.

But we are in a new age of Internet marketing where more and more young folks don’t like to read – or they can’t do so for very long – and this is making video much more appealing to that segment – as well as to others who are looking for something more advanced than the sound-byte news we receive from tee-vee.

Even so, the number of kindergarten communication mistakes I see on a daily basis in email – as well as video – is astounding.

Last weekend, my fulfillment office sent me a photo of all the packages set to go out that day. It was somewhat impressive. I’ve done far better in the past – but it was hundreds of packages ready for shipping.

And the grand majority of these orders were taken over the Internet after I sent out an email.

So you see, email is still the king of the Internet – and I’m known, not only as the Zen Master of the Internet – but the Emperor of Email, too.

I’ve written thousands of emails since I began playing on this juke box back in 1996. In years past I wrote over 1,000 per year. Many have copied my lead and as a result are now making fortunes.

A couple from Malaysia recently wrote to tell me that they started doing six figures after listening to me teach how to do email. Other prominent Internet marketers added ‘millyuns’ to their bottom line
by following what I teach.

Unlike other copywriting teachers, I instill belief and confidence in the minds of those who learn email copywriting from me.

Do other copywriting teachers install belief in oneself.

No.

They only teach strategies and techniques and tell you to work at it for a couple decades.

Yet, the truth of the matter is that email copywriting is a process you can learn very quickly – if you follow the principles and LAWS that I teach.

There are many who read my words and study what they THINK I am doing.  They disect paragraphs and sentences and highlight key words looking for hypnotic commands and other elements that make my emails mesmerizing. And then they try to add these elements into their copy – all to no avail.

I believe all writers have the ability to pull readers in by the heart and throat if they will be who they truly are. And so, although it is not a bad idea to read about hypnosis and other such things and how they apply to writing – I don’t think they are necessary.

Just learn to express yourself FULLY and CLEARLY and with POWER – and you’ll do just fine. All the so-called hypnotic stuff will flow out of you naturally, just as it does from any three or four-year old who wants something. Right now my eight-year old is relentlessly working me for tickets to the upcoming Super Bowl – in Tampa.

The key to success in email copywriting is learning WHAT to do, HOW to do it – and WHY – while developing an unshakeable belief in yourself and the products and services you offer.

In kung fu there is a saying, “A strength over-extended becomes a weakness.”

A profound concept, no doubt. Let’s look at how it applies outside of the martial arts realm.

Suppose you manage EVERY detail of your day – and feel you must work from a list ALL the time.

This will help you get more things done – but it will reflect in your body as stiffness, aches, pains and inflexibility. Your mind needs time each day to unwind – to sit in silence with no plan, no agenda. Just breathing and paying attention to life itself. Time in which to feel that no one is home.

When I’m in China I will often sit with a friend for a meal, talking – or simply sitting and sipping tea, for hours. Nothing to do. Nowhere to go. And these are some of those most profound moments of my life. Afterward I come up with ideas that wouldn’t have otherwise manifested if I was fixated on “time” and my schedule.

Rigidly sticking to the concept of “time” and never making room for spontaneity or synchronicity leads to stiffness, rigidity and pain. It’s an important strength, being able to manage one’s day and time – but if you’re too rigid, too strong – relationships get shattered, others feel neglected.

You’ve gained nothing.

The key is staying in the middle. Neither being to strong – or to lackadaisical. It’s having segments of your life that are controlled and others that are relaxed.

If everything is controlled by Father Time – then Mother Nature will make you pay a price. She will force you to relax when you least expect it. Better to plan on relaxing in advance.

As a martial artist I have routines I follow with great devotion and discipline.

It is not always the same workout – but often the same exercises. I have a plan for how many repetitions I will do each day – and I stick to it.

But even the same exercises are not the SAME if I delve into each with more feeling. If I dive DEEP into the experience of what I’m doing. If I really ground myself in the moment.

Some time ago, I planned on doing my evening routine at 10 PM – but I got engaged in conversation with a friend until late in the evening on the topic of “out of body experiences.”

It’s estimated that 25% of the population has one of these OBE’s sometime in his/her lifetime. Many get freaked out. Others are afraid to talk about it because people may think they’re looney.

So we spoke about this and other mysterious matters until after midnight. When he left I realized I still hadn’t done my final workout. So I went outside and began to train at 12:30 a.m.

Less than halfway through the form I was G-O-N-E. No concept of time. At least not accurate time.

I’d only been moving a short while, yet it seemed as if I’d been training for half an hour or more.

I continued to move – and time continued to feel distorted. A few minutes felt like an hour. Similar to the feeling of visiting Hawaii – and after one day you feel you’ve been there a week.

Since that evening I almost always have this same time distortion feeling when I train. Even if I time myself on certain drills, I’m so in the moment that time is like a foreign concept.

Around the same time I noted that this same feeling of time NOT being what it’s supposed to be, had entered other realms of my experience. When I sat to write a newsletter or article, there was no such thing as time. When I got up to speak in public – there was no such thing as 90 minutes or one hour.

Oddly enough, 90 minute talks turned into ones that were three, four – even five hours long. Without a break. And no one was leaving the room.

How could this be.

In the past I always spoke for 90 minutes then took a break. And I was a bit fatigued afterward. Now I spoke for hours and felt energized.

So strange.

The moral of the story, when a strength is over-extended, you get weakness. You get breakdown.

But when a strength is turned into a stretch – when you’re flexible enough to bend – you will not break. You’ll go further than you’ve ever gone before.

There’s a Chinese saying, “Bend with the wind to avoid the hurricane.”

Think of a tree that is rigid. A hurricane with easily dispose of it.

But a bamboo tree that bends with the wind – it will most likely be spared.

So it goes with your life.

Be strong where you are strong – but not too strong. Add flexibility into the picture and you may surprise yourself with what happens.

Best way to begin adding flexibility is to begin paying attention to your breathing.

Observe your inhale and exhale. Just watch. Do so no matter what you’re doing.

The second step is becoming keenly aware of your mental pictures and self-talk – and tweaking them to ones that are better.

The third step is moving without unneeded effort, resistance or struggle.

The technique I’m being exposed to has been around for centuries even though it’s just finding me. I read about it long ago but never experienced it first hand.

The doctor working on me puts a silk cloth over my abdomen and begins to roll and knead and press on my stomach, liver, gall bladder, colon and so on. As she does so she explains that this system was passed down to her via her great great grand mother, great grandmother, grandmother and so on.

Encouraging, yes.

And when she does this massage I think she immediately knows more about the condition of my internal organs than an x-ray or colonoscopy will show you.

How do she know.

It’s simple. When she presses on my organs, she feels for blockages. And once they are found she immediately begins to probe deeper.

Nice lady.

Now, if you are completely grossed out so far – let me explain that people go to this clinic with all sorts of internal difficulties. Constipation, overweight, horrible periods, enlarged prostate, stomach cramps – and so on. And within a few sessions they are alright.

Why am I going there. Well, I thought it would be interesting – and if nothing else, would give me something unusual to write about. That it has.

Let me tell you, the overall feeling of wellness you receive in one session – even if you’re not sick – is astounding. I went out halfway through the session – 1.5 hours worth – and when I opened my eyes I was seeing things from another world.

Strange as it may sound, I don’t think I was totally in my body. And the doctor didn’t bat an eye. She kept working on me while I looked at streams of light from another dimension.

When she was finished with my organs she had me roll over. Afterward she spent the next five minutes slapping me in the back and legs – I guess to put me back into my space suit.

“Hao le,” she said to let me know the session was over.

I stood up – then leaned against the table for a minute to taste the euphoria a bit longer before leaving the room.

For the next several hours I walked around in a blissed out state, thinking strange thoughts like, “I love you, man.” This would be fine if I was sitting with a good friend, but I was all by myself.

Strange, indeed.

But then again – maybe not.

In my study of the Tao I learned that your internal organs are store houses for both positive and negative emotions. Your lungs, for example, house courage on the positive side and depression, grief and sadness on the negative.

Your kidneys make room for gentleness on the positive side and fear on the negative.

Your liver stores kindness as well as anger.

Your heart stores love as well as impatience.

Your stomach makes room for contentment as well as worry.

Now, before you scoff at the above – think about what happens  when you go weak in the knees. You think a fearful thought, your kidneys get the signal, and then you begin to feel weak or dizzy. You may even feint. How can this be. Well, the kidneys control the strength in your legs. Don’t think this is so – then get punched in just one kidney and see how well you walk afterward.

I’ll write more on this organ fiddling stuff later – but before I do, let me interrupt myself to say one more thing, “I love you, man.”

Aaaah.

Now I’m going swimming. The hotel I’m staying in has an Olympic size lap pool that would make Michael Phelps proud.

Last week, my brother-in-law read the Chinese news, then turned to me and said:

“The news says that Obama will be the next U.S. president.”

“Bu yao shuo tai zao le,” I said, repeating a Chinese phrase often used whenever you want to praise someone you’ve just met – or whenever you think victory is assured.

It means: “Don’t say too early.”

In martial arts and sports, you learn the value of confidence. At other times, you learn the importance of never being over-confident. You learn to “act as if” – but to be very careful about appearing to step over the line. If you lack confidence you get nowhere. If you have too much, it can act like a curse.

There’s a balancing act going on at all times. Too much fear, not good. A little fear, probably a good idea.

Too much confidence – not good. Too little confidence, not good either.

When I was at the University of Iowa, early on I thought that being a member of the national championship team, coached by the legendary Olympic gold medalist, Dan Gable, was all I needed to have an edge over my opponent. I quickly discovered that, whether it gave me an edge or not – I better be prepared for a major battle every time I took to the mat. Many competitors want to beat your worse for no other reason than the fact that you are on the championship team.

I’ll never forget when Oklahoma was ranked number one and supposed to run away with the national title. Gables’ response to the reporters writing such things was brilliant. He played along with them. He wanted the Sooners to feel the pressure of being expected to win. He wanted the Hawkeyes to feel like the under-dogs because it would make them even hungrier for victory.

The strategy worked. Oklahoma folded at the last minute – when it counted most.

“Never make assumptions,”  a coach at Iowa once told me. “And do you want to know why,” he asked.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Because assumption is the MOTHER of all screw-ups.”

This morning Fan gave me the most recent news.

“The news now says McCain might win,” he laughed.

“Might,” I said. “We’ll see very soon. There may be some big surprises.”

So here we are on Decision Day – and I get to watch the action from a different world.

It’s great to live in a country in which we have the freedom to vote – to make decisions on our future.

Just never lose sight of the fact that the most important vote you will ever cast is the one in which you vote for YOURSELF.

Not only that, but the most important decision you will ever make is the decision to be successful no matter what. To make a decision to make no excuses for failure; to never believe that someone else is going to do it for you.

No one is coming to your rescue but YOU. You are the one who decides whether you’ll move forward. And you are the one who will decide whether you’ll succeed in good times or in bad.

Success is created in every economic climate. Let nothing stand in your way. Stand up and be counted. Seize the day.
