Below is an excerpt from my Theatre of the Mind Masters Newsletter:
CALM BODY, CALM MIND, CALM MIND, CALM BODY
Dr. Maltz states, “after a bit of practice with this technique, you will be able to give yourself the advantage of INSTANT RELAXATION at anytime and anywhere. You simply pause what you are doing and give the “Calm Body, Calm Mind, Calm Mind, Calm Body” directive to your Servo-Mechanism.” Over time, you get so good at this technique that you can do it while surrounded by a crowd of people.
Think of the NBA basketball player who is at the free throw line. The opposing crowd is waving balloons and cheering against him, wanting him to miss the shots. But the elite player can instantly calm himself down if he repeats the directive, provided he has practiced doing so when he is NOT in a high-pressure situation.
The time to practice is when the pressure is lowest, when it doesn’t appear to matter. This is similar to how schoolteachers have historically had students practice the proper response in the event of a fire. There’s no fire taking place when the students practice. The pressure is low; almost laughable.
But if there is a fire and the alarm gets pulled, the students will automatically react the way they practiced, but with greater speed and alacrity. They will form a single line and calmly file out of the building.
When you practice Calm Mind, Calm Body in a low-pressure situation, you will react the same way when there is high pressure. Your brain and nervous system will calm down instead of going into fight, flight or freeze…
