Both terms are just as misleading and off the mark as those who say they’re practicing “mindfulness meditation.”
The practice of meditation is mind-less – NOT mind-full.
The person whose mind is full cannot spontaneously act, create or do anything. He or she must “think” about it first. And the very act of thinking interferes with the flow of energy and ideas, that are always available to us – if we’re open to them.
Yes, there is a time for thinking – but when you’re creating – there’s very little of it. When you create – you get downloads from the ethers – or from within – or a combination of both – and you’re so busy being the DOER that there’s no time for thinking,
The time between conceiving of an idea and implementing the idea is short indeed. And the shorter the time the more you are in flow – the more you understand that you’re “being” instead of thinking about being.
When it comes to processes like Theatre of the Mind and the advanced Psycho-Cybernetics exercises in Zero Resistance Living – what you’re doing is using deep breathing, the power of relaxation and mental pictures to get into a state of flow.
Yes, you’re using your brain to picture what you want – but that’s NOT the same as sitting around pondering. And the proof is that when a person really “nails it” with his mental imagery practice – ACTION becomes instantly spontaneous. There’s no “thinking” about taking action. You just act.
If you make mistakes with the actions you take, you realize you’re now a bonafide member of a very large club that includes … all human beings.
You might think – if I took a little more time to think before I acted, maybe I wouldn’t have made a mistake.
Possibly – but not likely.
You can say to yourself, “I should have done this” or “I should have done that.”
But as Dr. Wayne Dyer says, “You can never should have done anything.”
Time spent thinking about something before acting rarely improves performance – and I’m sure you can come up with thousands of examples where it hinders performance.
As the great Yogi Berra once said, when a manager told him to “think” when he’s having an at bat – “How do you expect me to hit when I’m thinking?”
Yogi was right on.
You cannot think and simultaneously do anything well – just as you cannot meditate with a full mind or with mind-full-ness.
In order to get into FLOW – in order to live life without resistance – you must head the adage: “Empty your cup.”
This means empty your mind of all the Ph.D. knowledge you have on a subject and “let yourself go.”
Stop holding yourself back. Be true to yourself.
You might “think” this is easier said than done – and it is when you’re thinking such a thing.
But if you pay attention to your breathing and relax your body as you picture what you’d like to have in your life, emotion begins to build inside you and without even knowing why or how, you get off your duff and begin doing what you were picturing.
On the other hand, if you hold onto your breath (refusing to empty your cup), you cannot physically or mentally relax – and so you cannot truly emotionalize what you’re picturing – or make it happen.
And now, it’s time for this spontaneous flow to come to an abrupt halt by saying…
here endeth today’s lesson.
