The last few mornings, shortly after arising, I go to a “play room” in our home and practice falling.
Yes, you heard that right. I practice falling – something most people have great fear of – and never resolve. So, I came up with the idea to begin my day with fall-ure. Afterall, when you get fall-ure out of the way early on, the rest of the day is absolutely awesome.
I start off falling down backwards. I imagine someone pushing me in the chest, and I immediately collapse, as if I feinted, into a relaxed heap of cells on the floor.
As soon as I touch the floor, I start to get back up as quickly as I can while staying totally relaxed. To do this I focus on my breathing.
When I’m getting up, I’m not interested in adding more tension to my body because it will interfere with the process of standing.
Did you know that?
The same goes with falling. The reason people are afraid of falling (fall-ure) is because as soon as the person begins to fall, he tenses his muscles, holds his breath and does everything he can to prevent it.
Nothing wrong with preventing a fall – but being afraid of falling is pretty much the same as being afraid of failing, hence the term I coined: fall-ure.
When someone is afraid to fail, he’s also afraid of falling, and vice versa. Fear of failure doesn’t help you to succeed, just as fear of success doesn’t help you succeed.
Ridding your mind-body of fear is a wonderful idea. You didn’t come into this world riddled with fear. You learned fear. You watched your parents and learned to be afraid. You learned to be afraid from teachers, siblings, coaches and neighborhood bullies.
At some point you may have heard a “fear not” speech, or you got mentored by someone who taught you how to overcome fear. And learning from these people was a fortunate day in your life.
At the same time, you probably have no idea how much fear is still in your mind-body, regardless of how much time you’ve invested in “do the thing you fear” actions.
In addition to overcoming fear, other benefits of this drill are as follows:
1. All grogginess or feelings of not being fully awake yet vanish within 30 seconds.
2. My energy picks up dramatically. Tension leaves the mind and body in an instant, even if I felt I had none to begin with.
3. I feel loose and flexible all over.
Yes, I realize this drill is not appropriate for everyone – so heed the suggestions of your physician before beginning something like this.
If it’s not for you, have no fear. I have many other ways to rid yourself of fear.
By the way, be on the lookout for a special offer I’ll be sending your way within the next 24 hours.
Be Still – and Flow,
Matt Furey
