Something good for you today

What if you began your day today with the following mental picture: You see and hear someone you admire calling you by phone.

You answer and he says, “Something really good is coming to you today. I can’t tell you what it is. But keep your eyes peeled for it.”

After hanging up the phone, I believe you would spend the rest of the day LOOKING for the good thing coming your way.

And you would FIND it.

In fact, I’m willing to bet that before the end of the day you would call the person who phoned you to give him an update. And it would be positive.

When you begin your day looking for the good things that you expect to happen to you – you’ll attract more of them. Conversely, when you begin by looking for everything that could go wrong – you’ll find more of them as well.

The trick is learning how to turn everything that happens, the good and the supposedly bad into feedback that serves you and your purpose.

Who’s Hanging in Your Home?

Leonardo da Vinci and Walt Disney had something in common. They knew that the human mind thinks in pictures. So they hung their goals and/or pictures of projects they were working on in their environment.

Both of these men had pretty impressive levels of success, don’t you think.

Yet, what you put on your walls is NOT limited to pictures of goals you’d like to achieve or projects you are working on.

Are Your Thoughts Really Yours?

Of all the thoughts you have in your mind, how many of them are yours. How many are someone else’s.

You may be surprised to explore this question – not for a few seconds, but each day, for several minutes.

Many people are under the illusion that all their thoughts are their own. But this cannot be the case as you came into the world with an empty slate – and right from the start other people began feeding you their beliefs, thoughts, ideas, goals, agendas, habits and so on.

Without a doubt, learning from others is necessary. We need parents, teachers, helpers and so on. At the same time, when we’re adults, (or sooner) we would be wise to distinguish between what we truly think and believe and what other people have told us to think and believe.

There is a profound difference – and once you know what YOU think and believe – once you know who you truly are – then you find within yourself immense power and endurance to go after what you want in life.

So long as you are bound by fear, worry, self-doubt, depression and so on, you are not truly thinking your own thoughts – nor are you swimming in an energy field that is 100% yours.

Children don’t come into the world with worries, phobias, anxiety attacks, depression and so on. They either learn these ways of being – or they are subjected to negative attacks from others.

These negative attacks not only enter your mind – but your energy field as well. Changing your thoughts and mental pictures is an important step in the right direction. New self-talk and mental pictures, in and of itself, can and does change who you are on the inside – and this leads to changes on the outside.

At the same time, though, learning how to change the energy field that surrounds your body is also very important because there are times when you don’t feel right and it has nothing to do with what YOU were thinking.

For example, last summer I entered a bar in Thailand with a couple friends. As soon as we took a seat I looked at the others and said, “Let’s go.”

“Why. What’s up,” came the reply.

“I’ll tell you when we get outside,” I said.

Once outside I explained to my friends that this bar was filled with incredibly negative energy that was on the attack.

“How did you know this,” one person asked.

“I know because I felt sick to my stomach as soon as I sat down. Now we’re outside and I feel fine. What does that tell you.”

Most people are not as sensitive as I am to the negative – and this is one of the reasons why they are so easily influenced from a positive mental state to one that is not life affirming.

Remember this: Your energy field is much bigger than you are. And it sends out a signal to others, before you even utter a word. When you are positive this  field is vibrant and large. When you are in a rut your field shrinks considerably – offering you almost no psychic protection from the negative thoughts, emotions and attacks of others.

Advice from a 97-year old champion

So many people do everything they can to avoid making mistakes – yet mistakes are the corrective feedback we need to help us reach our goals. Trying to avoid mistakes is a HUGE mistake. Better to move and correct mistakes as you’re in motiion than sit idle trying to figure out how not to make a wrong move. The latter never seems to work.

When you’re in an airplane, most of the time the plane is off course. When you’re driving in a car – you must always have your hands on the wheel so you can make minor adjustments. You are continually modifying and correcting your course based upon ongoing feedback.

We tend to forget this when we get an idea to achieve a specific goal. We tend to think the key to success is never making a mistake. It’s not.

When you make a mistake and a teacher points it out to you – the answer is simple: Thank you for telling me that. I’ll work on that.

The average person says he’s sorry and apologizes when a mistake is pointed out to him.

‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.’

That’s all you ever hear – along with no change in behavior.

Better to hear ‘thank you – I’ll get right on that’ – and witness a change in behavior.

People who see feedback as helpful are grateful to learn what is steering them away from the goal. It may be a tough thing to do – to listen and be open – but it’s what the best of the best do.

Yes, you have the option to agree or disagree with the feedback – and you’ll become better at discerning what is helpful and what isn’t the more you practice – but you’ll never get anywhere if you view mistakes as negative and feedback as undesirable.

My best students LOVE being advised – even, as they would say it, ‘raked over the coals.’ And wouldn’t you know it – three of my students have played Carnegie Hall. Amazingly, all three of these Carnegie Hall performers are the BEST listeners and take advice better than anyone else. They beg for me to show them their mistakes.

Keep all of this in mind as you go through your day today. Mistakes are nothing to fear. Nor is the feedback that will help you improve.

Successful people get this and want more of it. Those on the road to failure don’t get it – and that is why they continue to fail. Make a choice which road you want to travel on. Make a choice to launch yourself like a torpedo to the destination of YOUR choosing.

No More Monkeys

Next time you feel like you’re being assaulted with “things to do” – take a moment to consider the following:

a. You’ll get more done faster if you focus on one thing at a time.

Picture the surgeon. He performs one operation after another, all day long. He doesn’t think about the NEXT surgery while doing the first. If he does he’ll botch the job he’s on.

b. When you feel pressure to get “everything” done – take a moment to focus on the area between your neck and shoulder blades – your “traps.” This is where a lot of tension is stored.

Let’s take the time to release it.

You’ve probably heard people talking about needing to get the “monkeys off their back.”

Well, you get them off your back by focusing on one thing at a time – and anytime you feel pressure rising, you catch yourself, take a deep breath and focus on your upper neck and back.

Feel any monkeys.

If so, change your mental picture. Take them off.

I assure you the monkeys are slowing you down.

They are NOT helping you move faster. They are not helping you get things done.

The best way to get things done is to make a list of what you have to do before you begin. Then take a few moments to breathe deeply and relax. See yourself getting the first thing done. Then the next.

See yourself doing all these things without pressure, without tension – without a single monkey.

Once you’ve accomplished the first thing on your list, then “clear the computer screen.”

Let your mind go blank. Compartmentalize.

Now see the next thing being accomplished. Center and focus. Then hop to it and do it.

True, you might think juggling three things at once is the key to getting things done.

You might think that feeling overwhelmed, slammed, swamped and beaten bloody are better ways to ponder your daily “to do list.”

I don’t think so.

Take a moment to visualize all the stress monkeys on your back. Then see all of them going away. See yourself totally focused and totally relaxed – in the flow.

I challenge you to do this.

Stop scratching your head. Relax, smile, breathe and focus.

Do this for the next thing on your list today. Then on the next. And so on. See how many things you can knock out in a spirit of calm and relaxation.

I’m betting you’ll be surprised.

Too Much Enthusiasm

Years ago, while living in California, a saying came out: “Curb your enthusiasm.”

Tis an important saying to know when doing business. Sometimes you can get so excited about what you’re doing or offering that in the midst of great enthusiasm you make foolish decisions.

Happens all the time.

Years ago, my friend Kim Wood, an NFL strength coach for 27 years, said: “An animal on the attack is cautious almost to the point of cowardice.”

A fascinating quote, eh.

Picture a cheetah running 70 mph after a deer or antelope. He doesn’t appear cowardly at all. Yet, prior to the 70 mph burst, the cheetah very carefully stalked his prey and scoped out the terrain. He does not simply take off on a sprint as soon as he’s hungry.

So the key to enthusiasm is balance. Just like confidence.

There’s confidence and over-confidence. There’s enthusiasm and over-enthusiasm.

Conversely, there is under-enthusiasm and under-confidence. I think most people who are struggling fall into the “under” category. They don’t need to curb their enthusiasm. It’s time for them to unleash it.

Enthusiasm for what you do and what you’re attempting to do is a cornerstone of success. Without it you cannot accomplish much. As Emerson wrote, “Nothing great was ever accomplished without enthusiasm.”

At the same time, being too enthusiastic, too confident and too positive can be a sign that danger is lurking. The key is the line of balance between a quality that brings you success – and a quality that harms you.

Years ago in my study of shuai jiao kung fu, which I won a world title in, Dr. Daniel Weng told me, “A strength over-extended becomes a weakness.”

Oh, how true.

And lest you think this saying only applies to martial arts – think again. It applies to everything in life. It also applies to every virtue.

Even love.

After all, even love has blind spots.

You’re No Small Potato

When the great Salvador Dali put paint to canvas and displayed what Psycho-Cybernetics meant to him, he told the tale of two self-images.

On the left side of the painting was the shadow of a man with a self-image the size of a small potato. Where was this small potato self-image leading him. Answer: Into the darkness – toward failure.

On the right side of the painting, the shadow of another man with a self-image ten feet tall. What direction was he headed in life. Answer: Toward the light – toward success.

Dr. Maltz often referred to the classic book, The Tale of Two Cities when describing Psycho-Cybernetics.

Why. Because how well we do in life depends upon this battle of two self-images; the failure sized self-image that is no bigger than a small potato – and the success-sized self-image that is ten feet tall.

Discovering the size of your self-image is key to changing it. When you go into the Theatre of Your Mind and picture yourself on the stage, how big are you. If you’re incredibly small, you’re now in perfect position to reconnect your success mechanism and start moving toward the good life.

If you’re self-image is already big, then you need to continually look for ways to re-inforce and improve. Regardless of how strong your self-image is, you need to continually work on making it better, otherwise, whether you like it or not, your self-image will weaken and deteriorate.

Every day take a few minutes to picture yourself the way you want to be. See yourself at your best. Imagine yourself living life in a way in
which you are happy, successful and enjoying the greatest port in the world: Peace of Mind.

Best Advice a Father Can Give

It hit me like a ton of bricks.

I couldn’t believe I’d “missed” it before. I’d read the book many, many times – but this time was different. A “secret” was revealed to me – and today I’m going to give it to YOU.

If you are open and receptive to this passage – you can expect a major breakthrough from what you are about to read.

I suggest you be OPEN.

Here’s the passage:

“Psychologist David Seabury says that the best piece of advice his father ever gave him was to practice positive mental imagery – immediately and “on cue,” so to speak, whenever he became aware of negative feelings. Negative feelings literally defeated themselves by becoming a sort of “bell” which set off a conditioned reflex to arouse positive states of mind.”

Now read this passage again. It comes from the 35-million copy best-seller, Psycho-Cybernetics.

Pay particular attention to the following words: “the best piece of advice his father ever gave him…”

Those words set the tone for for what the rest of the passage reveals.

Why. Because whenever something is the “best piece of advice” someone can give you – especially your father, it had better be GOOD.

In reading this passage I not only see this as the best advice I can give my son – but myself, and everyone I teach at my seminars and in my coaching programs.

So many people wonder why I am always so calm, cool and collected. Many wonder how I am able to speak before a crowd in a non- chalant, totally relaxed way and still have everyone totally riveted.

Most of the reason is because I have no thoughts of resistance when I speak. I’m not concerned about offending anyone. I’m not even trying to get people to like me. I am simply ME, take it or leave it.

Very few people are this way. They’re trying to figure out how to get others to approve of them or like them. Not a good strategy because the more you NEED others to like you the less they will like you.

Same goes with money. The more you NEED it – the more it will stay away from you. Money and friends go where they are wanted – not where they are NEEDED. There is a world of difference between want and need. One attracts. The other repels.

Even if you think you NEED money or NEED friends, so long as you have this thought you are in a repelling state of mind. Never NEED anything. Want is all you want. Want comes from a vibration of “I’m happy already and I’d like to have this, too.” Need comes from a vibration of “I’m miserable and frustrated and I need this thing to make me happy.”

Become aware of negative NEED feelings when they arise – and if and when they do – learn, through practice, to have these feelings immediately trigger the thought to change your vibration into a “feel good” one.

Most people have never been taught this by their fathers – or by any other teacher. They’ve been taught to set goals, to have a burning desire, to be optimistic and have a positive attitude.

But what do you do when you look at your bank statement, or your finances and you immediately begin to feel bad? What do you do when the reality of your situation begins ruining your day? What do you do when you’re feel frustrated, fearful and worried? You do what Dr. Seabury’s father told him to do and what I’m telling you to do

First, you “recognize” that you are feeling bad.

Second, you understand that this “feel bad” vibration REPELS what you say you want. Your want is not a want. It’s a need that comes with the expectation of something outside of yourself making you happy.

Third, you recognize that this “feel bad” imagery sends a signal to the Universe that you cannot be happy “for no particular reason.” And that’s not good.

There is a balancing act you are to learn between having a burning desire and having a desire that burns you.

On the one hand having a burning desire creates the necessary mind-set that will create the thing you want. On the other hand, if the desire is connected to “I’m miserable unless I have this thing” – then you are chasing success and that success will always run faster than you do.

Your objective is to attract success; not to chase it. Chasing success is repelling success. You never get what you are chasing. At the end of the month you always come up short; you always need a quick fix. And fixes don’t fix anything.

Several years ago a man sent me an email in which he said I was “chasing the almight dollar.” I had no idea what he was talking about. I couldn’t even form a mental image of myself doing what he was writing about.

What the man was saying was a reflection of what HE thought I was doing.

He was wrong. When I chased the almight dollar – and I did that for years – I had no money. When I stopped chasing and learned to attract it – it flowed into my life so fast I was nearly knocked over.

Continually alter and improve your mental pictures so that dollars are chasing you. Anytime you begin feeling as if you’re no longer attracting – then look at what you’re picturing in your mind and see if you’re repelling more than you’re attracting.

At all times the forces of attraction and repulsion are at play. It’s simply a matter of how strong the forces are. If you’re repelling energy is stronger you go deeper into debt. If your attraction force is stronger you get wealthier. If both are equally strong, you feel “stuck.”

Now the question is, what do I do if I am repelling more than I’m attracting?

The answer:

1. You change the way you feel by changing the mental picture you have of your situation. Everytime you feel the negative feeling, it’s an alarm that triggers a positive one. A bell goes off inside. “Uh, oh. Not good. Change the mental picture.” You do this over and over and the feel bad vibe lasts less than a second and you’re back to feeling good. Essentially, no one will ever know you even visited the feel bad emotion. It was “here and gone” in the time it takes to click a new photograph.

2. Begin each day with Theatre of the Mind exercises so that you go through the whole day without resistance. Don’t just read positive messages or books. DO the exercises. Stand before the mirror and speak. Picture what you want when you speak. Sit in a chair and use your creative imagination. Recall previous successes and link them to your future.

3. Have a burning desire in mind, a goal. But at the same time don’t expet the goal to give you happiness. You don’t let the desire burn you by feeling bad if you don’t have it yet. In fact, even though you WANT the goal and put your heart and soul into creating what you want – you are also able to “walk away” from the goal emotionally. There is no expectation of your desire giving you anything other than the thing you desire. For example, if you want more money – you don’t expect more money to give you happiness. You simply want more money – and you put yourself into happiness mode NOW.

If you’re happy even though you don’t yet have in your possession the thing you want – then you are attracting it to you.

If you’re unhappy because you don’t yet have in your possession the thing you NEED – then you are repelling it.

So get happy NOW – not later.

Recognize that fear, frustration and angst are only there to help you change course. They’re there to help you see that your mental picture is off-target. Put the right mental image back onto the screen of your mind and watch how the Universe lines things up in your favor.

If success is 90% mental in every field, then you better learn the 90% – don’t you think?
