The Biggest Competitor You Will Ever Face

Competition is a good thing. A great thing. It brings out the best in a person. It shows a person where his true weaknesses are.

Yet, after a competition, there is an enormous danger. The person who loses may consider himself a failure.

It is one thing to say to yourself, ‘I didn’t do well today, but I’ll do better next time. I wasn’t myself today, but I’ll improve on this. I didn’t win today, but I’m still a winner inside.’

I realize it’s hard to do sometimes, especially if you really wanted to win – but it must be done for you to move to the next level.

The best athletes, salespeople, entrepreneurs and so on, don’t compete with others as much as they compete with themselves. Afterall, once you’re better than all your competitors, how can you continue to improve if your focus is simply about ‘beating the others.’

When I was in college my father told me to ‘make yourself your greatest opponent.’ He was right.

In order to do this you must go back in time and picture your best moments, your greatest successes. You must relive the feelings of confidence you once experienced.

Doing so is the same as a good friend reminding you of your value; that you’re someone special. Only difference is that NOW you are being a friend to yourself. You’re going within and finding the BIG SELF who inherently knows that you came into this world to succeed.

I once knew a businessman who was very successful for more than ten years. Then the demand for his product died off and he had to close up shop. He thought of himself as a failure; that he was a loser.

I talked to the man and said, ‘My goodness, you had 10 years of success. I wouldn’t call that a failure. Close this shop and move on. Figure out a way to tap into  another current trend and you’ll be off to the races again.’

He listened. And he succeeded once again.

There are great athletes who go undefeated until the ‘BIG SHOW.’ Then, if they lose the big show, they feel like total failures. But they’re not. They simply lost one game.

So long as these athletes gave it everything they had in that game, they can hold their heads high. And if they didn’t give it everything they had, they can declare that ‘next time will be different.’

Do as Dr. Maltz always says. Instead of trying to keep up with the Joneses and feeling badly when you’re not at their level – ‘keep up with yourself.’

How I Define Success

The other day a man wrote to tell me that he thinks  I equate having lots of money as being successful.

This assumption is an easy one to make. After all, I do have a book out entitled 101 Ways to Magnetize Money and I have conducted a number of seminars on Internet marketing.

Yet, those who’ve read my book and have attended my events, quickly find out that my approach to success is not all about riches, cars, homes, houses and so on.

Sure, having all of the above is great fun – but even more important is the mindset that helps you bring them into your life.

I’ve shocked the living stuffings out of attendees by telling them that money and riches don’t bring happiness. Neither do they bring unhappiness.

Money doesn’t make you happy or unhappy. It doesn’t make you a good person or a bad one. It doesn’t make you successful or unsuccessful.

All money does is move from person to person, or sit around taking up space.

That’s it. All of it.

Anyone who is happy to finally hit it big in business was happy before they hit it big.

The trinkets and toys simply make it easier to amplify your current emotional state. If you were happy before you made a ton of dough, you’ll be happy afterward.

And if you were a miserable slug before making your fortune, you’ll still be miserable afterward.

This is why I teach people to cultivate the inner qualities you want NOW. Grab peace of mind now. Grab happiness now.

Success is nothing but having a goal that you picture and draw energy from. It is NOT the achievement of the goal.

Let me say that again. Success is nothing but having a goal that you picture and draw energy from.

What kind of energy?

Success energy.

Yes, long before you ever succeed at anything, you picture and feel what it would be like to succeed – and when you do this, you draw energy from the mental picture you manufactured in your mind. This mental picture makes you feel successful in the present, long before your goal becomes a reality.

Over the last couple days I finished a book that will be released sometime later this year.

When I was editing the book I was totally absorbed in the moment. Hours flew by in a heartbeat. I was having a great time.

Upon finishing the project I was excited. I was pumped. I got a charge out of crossing the finish line. At the same time, I know this feeling won’t last long unless I set another goal and draw energy from it to use today, this very moment.

So today I began drawing energy from the next project. And I’m very excited about it. Just thinking about it makes me feel alive, happy and excited. Yet, I’m not even close to finished yet.

In Psycho-Cybernetics you learn to draw energy from previous successes. You also learn to use that energy toward a brighter future. So the truth is you’re absorbing energy from the past as well as the future – and the process of doing this makes you successful long before you hit the target.

Unsuccessful people are those who cannot appreciate their past and have nothing to look forward to in the future.

Successful people are those who appreciate their past as well as who they are now. Successful people are those who can find a way to win, a way to be happy, no matter what. Even when they fail, they find a way to turn their letdown into a source of fuel and inspiration.

You Deserve It

The other day I was coaching a guy by phone and about halfway through the call I asked, “Do you deserve success?”

“No,” he said.

Bad answer.

I gave him a second chance by asking the question a different way. Same answer.

Then the man said something he probably thought of as profound: “No one really deserves success. You either want it or you don’t. That’s all.”

“Okay,”I said, “tell me about these people who don’t have clean water in villages in Africa. Do they deserve clean water?”

“Yes.”

“What about you?”

“Uh, good question. Let me think about it.”

“Think about it?” I bellowed. “What’s there to think about?”

“You know, I’m really stuck on this one,” he said. “I don’t know why I think this way and maybe it’s part of the reason I’ve felt stuck.”

“It may be more than PART of the reason,” I replied. “Wanting something is important, but believing you are worthy, deserving and entitled to it is a HUGE portion of the successful mind set.”

“Maybe this is part of my Christian upbringing,” he said.

“Nonsense,” I replied. “I’ve heard Buddhists, Jews, Catholics and non-believers spout the same crud.”

“So wanting it isn’t enough?”

“Correct. It’s just like the people who want more money – but believe having it is bad. How can you attract something you are against? How can you want something but not believe you deserve to have it? Doesn’t make any sense to me at all.”

“Okay, so how do I make myself deserving?” he asked.

“Follow everything I teach in 101 Ways to Magnetize Money,” I replied. ”

“Begin studying it right now. And as you do, look around your home. See everything you have before you and declare, “I deserve to have this. I have a right to it. Then, once you get used to doing that – do it with the things you don’t yet have, but want.”

Follow this simple strategy, my friend, and you’ll be on your way to greater levels of success in all areas of your life.

Never Leave a Tip

Traveling in foreign countries is great, especially when you go to places where you never leave a tip.

I love Japan. No tips for the bellman in the hotel. No tips for the taxi drivers. No tips for the waitress.

In China, no tips for waitress. No tips for taxi. The bellman, however, will gladly accept.

In the U.S., many people earn part of their living via tips from customers. And you can learn a lot about human behavior by watching how a waiter or waitress acts when the meal is nearly over.

Some waitresses are rude – until the meal is nearing completion. Then they go through a transformation. They put on a happy face and make polite conversation.

Others come up from behind and place a hand on your shoulder or back – injecting tip intention into your central nervous system. That’s one way service people try to magnetize money.

Do you fall for it?

Okay, let’s play a game to see how much guilt you have or don’t have about money.

Go into a restaurant and leave without paying a tip.

Just once.

Note how you feel.

Next time leave a tip that is double what you’d normally leave.

Once again, note how you feel.

After each incident, pay attention to how much extra change you begin magnetizing toward you.

When you don’t tip or tip extra (I’m only talking about the U.S. here) – does this behavior make you feel worthy of more?

Moreover, does worthiness or deservingness have anything to do with earning power?

Nuking Negative Energy

Yesterday, when I was flying to Manhattan, a man used the restroom. No big deal, except that on the way back to his seat he forgot to close the door. And I was in the front row.

As the door swung back and forth with the turbulence, I got a whiff of what he was cooking.

Not pleasant.

It brought all sorts of ideas about germs, disease and swine flu to mind.

I kicked the door from my seat in an attempt to close it. The flight attendant immediately saw this and rushed to my aid. Thank goodness.

This morning I got up and looked at the socialist newspaper published here in New York.

On the front page alone I read about Iran firing a test missile, California being the proof that democracy somehow doesn’t work – and Irish boys who were molested over a 60-year period by priests.

What to do in the face of all this negativity?

Ignore it or do something about it?

The answer: Both.

You focus on what you want instead of what you don’t want – and then you take immediate action to get what you do want.

An open door to a restroom on a plane is not good. So you picture it closed and do something to close it.

The same goes with any area of your life. You close your mind to the images and pictures of negativity – you do what is necessary to stop the damage – and while doing so you open your mind to images of what you do want.

Close one door – open another.

That’s how you begin to nuke negative energy. You get clear on what you want, then you go after it. You get clear on what you don’t want – and you make sure it doesn’t happen.

This formula works in good times as well as bad. It works when you want to be in a new career – and it works when you want to earn more money.

When your mind is open to possibilities, you have freedom to move – to find a way to win.

Sadly, your chances of finding a way to win probably won’t be published in a daily newspaper. They probably won’t be on the nightly schnews.

If You Do What You Love, Will Money Follow

Years ago a book came out entitled, Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow.

At the time I was a personal fitness trainer in Santa Cruz, CA, working from early in the morning till late at night.

I loved this career when I began – even so, it didn’t take long for me to yearn for a higher level of income.

Some people laughed at the idea of doing what you love and earning more. I never did.

Instead, I looked for ways to link love of job with increased earning potential.

I looked for possibilities – and along they came.

No, I Didn’t Use a Teleprompter

In the early afternoon I spoke with a man who watched all my video presentations on the Power of Confidence.

He wondered how I was able to speak so smoothly and effortlessly. He assumed I had a teleprompter to keep me on track.
